on vices and virtues..

I always need an "idea" in life..something to make me a little better or give me the edge. ... it may be a project, a far-fetched dream or as simple as a to-do list. I have yet to decide if this is a vice or a virtue. I think perhaps it is a vice- considering I find it hard to be happy with my present self. (All this isnt to say that I am unhappy with my life right now, because I am truly content) I just find myself constantly thinking of ways I need to improve me. Ugh. well, vice or virtue.... It sometimes makes my brain hurt at the end of the day.

Seneca's thoughts-
"We should every night call ourselves to an account; What infirmity have I mastered today? What passions opposed? What temptation resisted? What virtue acquired? Our vices will abort of themselves if they be brought every day to the shrift. "

pippi longstocking

Pippi Longstocking is from the imagination of Swedish author Astrid Lindgren. Pippi, the daughter of a seldom-seen pirate, has long red ponytails, piles of gold, superhuman strength and boundless mirth. Her books are among the most translated children's books in the world.
As a kid, my dream was to live in Pippi's world. She had spunk... so much independence and the ability to make anything happen. Everyday was extraordinary.

Banned Book Week

As you've probably figured out, I work at a library. Last week, I had a very thought provoking conversation with the head librarian about Banned Book Week. I looked up some information on it and found it's a very controversial subject. I had to look long and hard to find an article that I agreed with.

In a nutshell- September 24th- October 1st is deemed National Banned Book Week by the ALA . During this week, first amendment rights are "celebrated" and will be promoted in bookstores, libraries and schools nationwide. While no one is more for first amendment rights .... I prefer the following take on it.
The American Library Association is lying to Americans by promoting yet another, “Banned Books Week,” Focus on the Family said today. The event will be promoted in bookstores, libraries and schools .
“The ALA has irresponsibly perpetrated the ‘banned’ books lie for too long,” said Tom Minnery, vice president of public policy for Focus on the Family. “Nothing is ‘banned,’ but every year this organization attempts to intimidate and silence any parent, teacher or librarian who expresses concern about the age-appropriateness of sexually explicit or violent material for schoolchildren.”
The ALA argues that adult material—even the most hard-core pornography—should never be restricted from children in schools and libraries. The organization also opposes computer-filtering software in libraries that would protect children from hard-core pornographers and pedophiles. Minnery responded, “Apparently, the ALA’s agenda does not include protecting children from harm or safeguarding the rights of librarians, teachers and parents who are desperately trying to protect kids.”
“What the ALA calls ‘censorship,’ most Americans would call common sense,” he added. “For example, a Florida mother was horrified to find her daughter reading a school library book containing profanity, prostitution, graphic violence and a detailed account of a suicide attempt. She challenged this as inappropriate material for her second-grader. For that she was labeled a ‘censor’ and the book went on the ALA’s ‘banned’ list.”
He concluded, “We all cherish our First Amendment freedoms—now more than ever. But parents who dare to speak up when their children are assaulted with sexually explicit and violent material are not ‘censors’—and most definitely not what the ALA calls ‘threats to intellectual freedom.’ We encourage more parents to reject the intimidation tactics of the ALA, to exercise their constitutionally protected rights, and to continue to be involved in their children’s education.” -Focus on the Family

The five love languages..

I have yet to apply anything I learned from this book in an actual relationship but at least I know myself a little better.
Though the book needs to be read in order to fully understand your love language... I found this online test that is almost accurate with the book. http://selectsmart.com/FREE/select.php?client=lovelanguages

The Chronicles of Narnia

C.S. Lewis’ timeless stories.. THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA: THE LION, THE WITCH AND THE WARDROBE follows the exploits of the four siblings -- Lucy, Edmund, Susan and Peter -- in World War II England who enter the world of Narnia through a magical wardrobe while playing a game of ‘hide-and-seek’ in the rural country home of an elderly professor. Once there, the children discover a charming, peaceful land inhabited by talking beasts, dwarfs, fauns and giants that has become a world cursed to eternal winter by the evil White Witch, Jadis. Under the guidance of a noble and mystical ruler, the lion Aslan, the children fight to overcome the White Witch’s powerful hold over Narnia in a climactic battle that will free Narnia from Jadis’ icy spell forever. Classic Lewis...great reading!

Me.

My name is Brittanie. I am a 21 year old mild, sometimes crazy, always-busy-never- totally-in-balance dreamer. I am the oldest of three - I have a beautiful, mischevious and very hilarious sister and a talented, agreeable and 100% all american brother. I work full-time at our local public library where I have a kid's storytime, work with the homebound , shelve incessantly and get to know all the lovely people in my little village . My parents pastor a United Pentecostal church that is thriving and growing. I am the full-time music/choir director there... always learning new facets of music and people. My everyday life includes 5:30 A.M. green tea, psalms, a to-do list, reading non-fiction and practicing the piano.
